The Clinic Room

HOLLOWS, BAGS AND DARK COLOUR UNDER THE EYES

Dark circles are one word for four different problems.

Thin skin, pigment, a hollow that casts a shadow, or a bag that does. Creams cannot reach any of them. The consultation finds out which you have, often two at once, and plans for that.

Free, about 40 minutes, in London, Birmingham or Manchester. A written plan and the price before you decide.

Most people recognise themselves in two or three of these. Tick what you notice and see which pattern it points to, and what a practitioner would check.

TICK WHAT YOU NOTICE

WHAT THIS TELLS YOU

Tick one or more and this fills in.

Dark circles is usually one of 4 patterns: thin skin, pigment, a hollow, a bag. The ticks show which yours most resembles.

How we treat dark circles

Most people are offered the Miracle Eye Programme first. A combination, not a single treatment: light-based treatment for colour, skin boosters for thin skin, and a small amount of filler where a hollow casts a shadow. Built at The Clinic Room over eight years.

  1. 1A close examination under good light, often with a skin scanner
  2. 2Which of the four causes you have, usually two at once
  3. 3A combination plan: light-based treatment, skin boosters, and filler only where a hollow casts a shadow

A standard course is three to six visits over six to ten weeks. You will know your number, in writing, before you decide.

“Now two months into the programme, I’m already seeing visible results, which is incredibly encouraging.”

Where it usually comes from

  • Skin so thin the vessels beneath show through
  • Pigment in the skin itself
  • A hollow between eye and cheek that casts a shadow
  • A bag of fat or fluid that casts a shadow

IN DEPTH · FOR THOSE WHO WANT THE WHY

Dark circles, explained properly

Four different problems, one name

The skin under the eye is the thinnest on the face, with very little fat beneath it, so what lies underneath shows through. Dark circles can be the blue-purple of blood vessels seen through thin skin, brown pigment in the skin itself, a shadow cast by a hollow between the eye and the cheek, or a shadow cast by a bag of fat or fluid. Most people have two at once.

Each has a different cause. Thin skin and hollowing tend to run in families and increase with age as the face loses volume. Pigment is more common in darker skin types and is worsened by rubbing, allergies and sun. Bags come from fat that has moved forward or fluid that pools overnight. Tiredness makes all four look worse but causes none of them.

Why creams and concealer only go so far

An eye cream sits on the surface. It can hydrate the skin so fine lines are less visible and, with caffeine or similar ingredients, briefly tighten it, but it cannot thicken the skin, move fat, fill a hollow or reach pigment that sits below the surface. Concealer covers colour but does nothing for a shadow, which is why it can look grey over a hollow.

The honest first step is to work out which of the four you have, because a treatment for the wrong one does nothing. Looking down and then up in good light is one simple test: a shadow from a hollow changes with the angle of the light, while pigment does not.

How a plan is built at the consultation

The practitioner examines the area under good light, often with a skin scanner, and watches how the light falls as you look down and up. That separates colour from shadow and thin skin from pigment.

Most people with dark circles are offered the Miracle Eye Programme: a light-based treatment for colour, skin boosters to thicken and hydrate thin skin, and a small amount of filler only where a hollow casts a shadow. Skin boosters, PRP or laser resurfacing may be discussed on their own. If nothing would help, the practitioner says so.

Educational information, not a diagnosis. Your practitioner examines your skin in person before anything is planned.

Questions people ask before booking

I have tried eye creams. Why would this be different?

Creams work on the top layer of skin. Dark circles sit deeper than a cream can reach, which is why they need clinic treatments chosen for the cause you actually have.

Will you tell me if nothing will help?

Yes. If a treatment is not suitable for you, the practitioner says so and suggests what will work instead, or that nothing is needed.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. About 40 minutes, in person, in London, Birmingham or Manchester. You leave with a written plan and the price. No obligation.

How much will it cost?

It depends on what your skin needs. Your figure is written into your plan at the free consultation, before you decide, and there are flexible instalment options with no interest or admin fees.

How many visits, and how long?

A standard course is three to six visits over six to ten weeks. If there is a date you are working to, count back ten weeks and tell us.

Does it hurt?

Most treatments feel like warmth, tingling or a quick sting rather than pain, and numbing cream is used where it helps. The practitioner tells you exactly what to expect for your treatment before you decide, and you can stop at any point.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on the treatment and on your skin. Many plans are three to six visits over six to ten weeks; some single treatments are one visit. Your written plan says the number before you pay for anything.

When will I see a difference, and how long does it last?

Some treatments show a change within days; those that work by building collagen take six to twelve weeks to show fully. How long results last depends on the treatment, your skin and how well it is protected from the sun. The practitioner gives you a realistic timeline rather than a promise.

What is the downtime?

Anything from none to a few days of redness or peeling, depending on the treatment. Each treatment page says what to expect, and the plan is timed around your diary where it matters, for example before an event.

Is it safe for darker skin?

Darker skin has more active pigment cells and marks more easily, so settings and treatments are chosen for your skin type and some are avoided. Tell us your skin type at the consultation and the plan is built around it.

Who should not have it?

Pregnancy, some medications, active infections and certain medical conditions rule some treatments out. The consultation goes through this with you, and if a treatment is not suitable the practitioner says so and suggests what will work instead.
